Kids just love listening to stories. Engaging tales are a wonderful way for kids to learn about the world around them and expand their imagination at the same time. Singapore has it share of folk tales and legends. During the June school holidays, kids can watch and learn about these on stage at The Kidz Academy Storyland from 9 to 11 June 2017.
The free Kidz Academy Storyland will be presenting 4 legends of Singapore plus 1 original tall tale in ‘live’ theatrical performances!
The Boy & The Swordfish
The Boy & The Swordfish is based on the folktale of how Bukit Merah got its name. Legend goes that a village was being plagued by swordfish attacks. A clever boy devised a plan to save the village. He was so successful that as his popularity rose, so did the King’s jealousy. This led to events that resulted in the name Bukit Merah or Red Hill in Malay.
The Prince & The Lion
There are no lions in Singapore but that didn’t stop Sang Nila Utama from dubbing the island Lion City or Singapura. Kids will enjoy listening to the entertaining story of The Prince & The Lion and how that chance encounter resulted in the name of our country.
The Strongest Man Who Lived
Badang was a farmer who was given the opportunity to make a wish. Instead of wealth and riches, he used the wish to turn himself into the strongest man that ever lived. What did he do with his newfound strength? Find out at The Kidz Academy Storyland.
The Tale of Two Sisters
A pair of orphaned sisters were inseparable. One day, one of the sisters was chased down by pirates. The pirate chief was so taken by her beauty that he wanted to marry her. What happened next led to the formation of Sisters Islands.
Pinnochio in Singapore
The story of Pinnochio takes on a local spin. Presented by ArtBeatz, an artistic wing of IQkidz Enrichment, Pinnochio chances upon a performance at a village in Singapore. He is enthralled by the performance but has to continue on his quest to find his lost father. A villager then tells him that his father may be inside a whale!
