SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark is an initiative by Singapore Art Museum under its direction to diffuse art into various parts of Singapore. It brings the experience of art into an industrial setting with galleries for large-scale installations.
Installations at the SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark Galleries
The main space at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark is located on the ground floor of the industrial building. There are three galleries, two of which are climate-controlled to host large exhibitions.
For its opening, one of the galleries is playing host to a work by Thai-born and US-based artist Korakrit Arunanondchai. A Machine Boosting Energy into the Universe transforms the gallery into a post-apocalyptic environment with used electronics, auto parts, and clothing that have been refashioned into cyborgian figures.
With loud music playing on the screen in the darkened room, it evokes like a post-cyber punk world.
The larger gallery is occupied by a work entitled REFUSE. It is an inter-media exhibition about music, mushrooms and decomposition by the band The Observatory. The installation, which fills the large room, combines the band’s interest in fungi and mycelial networks to explore decomposition and composition from biological and musical perspectives.
The last gallery on the first floor, The Engine Room, is currently showing a video Gan Siong King: My Video Making Practice which features the Malaysian artist’s engagements with the moving image.
At the reception foyer area there is also an installation Flirting Point.
The final art space at SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark is tucked away within the Singapore Art Museum’s office on the third floor. Singapore Art Museum’s Residents Chu Hao Pei, Salty Xi Jie Ng, and Johann Yamin are using the space to present their explorations on topics such as rice, rituals and gaming in Present Realms.
Visiting SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark
SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark makes use of an industrial setting to present interdisciplinary artistic practices. Personally, we found that the installations aren’t necessarily family friendly but targeted more at those who may enjoy modern, contemporary art and its mediums.
SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark is located at 39 Keppel Road, #01-02 Tanjong Pagar Distripark, Singapore 089065. It is open from 10 am to 7 pm daily. Admission is free for all visitors from 14 January to 14 February 2022 to celebrate the first month of its opening.
