The Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute (KTP-NUCMI) is the paediatrics cluster of the National University Hospital. A visit to KTP-NUCMI can be stressful for parents with a sick child. To help alleviate the stress, the building has been designed to make a visit as comfortable as possible.
One of the facilities that has been installed to make a visit as stress-free as possible is the KTP-NUCMI outdoor playground.
Outdoor Children’s Playground at the Khoo Teck Puat – National University Children’s Medical Institute
The outdoor KTP-NUCMI playground is located beyond the nature-themed reception in a lush enclosed garden. It is not accessible to the general public.
However, it does act as a space where kids can get outdoors and move about if needed.
The KTP-NUCMI outdoor playground was installed by playground provider RetroMax in June 2023.
The playground consists of several low play elements that are suitable for younger children.
Two mounds can be found one end of the playground. A set of climbing holds offer some assistance to younger kids as they make their way up the gentle slope.
Connecting the first mound to the next is a little wobbly bridge. This sways gentle side-to-side to provide some motion.
On the second mound, located under the shade of a mature tree, there is a double slide where two children can slide down together side-by-side.
Another play feature at the KTP-NUCMI outdoor playground is a double swing. This allows two people to enjoy the ride together, facing each other.
A couple of low balancing logs and play panels provide more opportunities for kids to play, hopefully making the hospital visit more enjoyable and less stressful.
Turning Waiting Time into Play Time
The outdoor playground is one of several ways that the KTP-NUCMI building has been themed and designed to make the experience of a hospital visit less intimidating for a child and his or her caregiver.
Instead, the focus is on creating a child-centric and family-friendly therapeutic environment that delivers holistic healthcare to children.
