Yip Yew Chong is well known for his heritage murals in neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Tiong Bahru and Kampong Glam. This time around, he is exhibiting his work in a series of installations at shopping malls around Singapore.

For A Stroll in the Painting, Yip was inspired by the artworks of Cheong Soo Pieng, one of the most influential Singapore artists of his generation, and in particular, Cheong’s Drying Salted Fish.

Cheong's Drying Salted Fish

Cheong’s Drying Salted Fish, painted in 1978, is a work that illustrates how fish was commonly preserved in Southeast Asia from the 1940s to the 1960s. Back then, it was not unusual to see salted fish drying out in the sun.

Cheong’s work has led Yip to create scenes of Southeast Asia.
