We were quite excited to learn that Five Star Dimsum restaurant had opened a new branch at Sunset Way.

Five Star Dimsum Restaurant

Located next to En Ramen, the new branch of the dim sum brand occupies two units – one for food preparation and the other as an indoor seating area – and it had substantial amount of outdoor deck seating too.

The ordering system at Five Star Dimsum makes use of an order sheet and pencil.

Five Star Dimsum ordering counter

After selecting the dishes that you would like to order, fill in the table number and take the order sheet to the counter to place the order.

We ordered a variety of dim sum dishes and, since this Five Star Dimsum also serves dishes, a Moonlight Hor Fun.

Normally, we would order a basket of har gow and siew mail. Unfortunately, they did not have har gow available. So, we just settled for the siew mai alone.

Siew mai at Five Star Dimsum

When the basket of four siew mai arrived at our table, it looked rather usual. The meat at the top was darker than usual. We tried it and it had a strong mushroom flavour. Perhaps, this explained the dark shade of the siew mai.

Char siew bao

Next was the char siew bao. This comes in a basket of three. The buns felt nice and fluffy as we broke into it. However, the filling was rather sweet for our taste and the dough also felt a bit mushy. It left us with a strange aftertaste.

Things were not going well for our experience at Five Star Dimsum.

Rice rolls

Next was the rice rolls. This was not the silky soft type of rice rolls. If the silky soft type of rice rolls are like silk pyjamas, these were more like a woolly blanket.

Prawn fritters

We then had the prawn fritters, which tasted quite standard.

Battered carrot cake

The carrot cake was better. It was a deep fried carrot cake and it combined the crispness of the batter with soft carrot cake inside.

Moonlight Hor Fun

Lastly, we had the Moonlight Hor Fun. This was rather bland for our palate when it first arrived. Of course, you can add soy sauce to taste.

Overall, we were a bit disappointed with our experience at Five Star Dimsum. Perhaps it is teething problems at a new outlet. What was good was that the prices are quite budget friendly.
