You might have heard of the current trending game of “Among Us”, which although released in 2018 has received an influx of players that can be attributed to well-known YouTubers and Twitch streamers playing it with their squad and putting it out as content on their platforms.

If you’re wondering what all the hype is about, here are 5 quick facts about the popular online game: Among Us.

1. Among Us is an online multiplayer social deduction game

Set in space, a virtual room of 4-10 players will take on one of two roles: Crewmates and Imposters.

The goal of a Crewmate is to complete the tasks around the map or vote the imposters off the ship.

An Impostor’s goal is to secretly sabotage tasks around the ship and kill the Crewmates without being identified. When an Imposter kills off a player, the avatar can be found by another active player and they can then commence a discussion to try to vote off who they believe is the imposter.

2. You can play Among Us on Mobile and on PC

Among us is free for download on mobile devices on both the Apple and Android store. If you wish to play it on PC, you can purchase it on the Steam platform for $5.25.

There are also bundles that you can buy which will give you mini avatars as well as costumes that your Crewmate avatar can wear throughout the game!

Players can also enjoy the cross-platform play between Android, iOS and PC.

3. Players can communicate via the in-game chat or through voice

When discussing who the imposter is, players can use the written chat function which is in the game.

Currently, Among Us does not have a built-in voice chat function. When players are discussing, they need to either use the in-game chatroom or a separate voice chat app, like Discord or Zoom, if they want to speak to players in a lobby.

We prefer using voice chats when playing these games as it is also easier to make accusations as well as to defend one’s self by speaking than typing.

If playing with strangers in a public game, there is always a chance that you may encounter all sorts of people. If you are concerned about kids interacting with strangers, you may wish to monitor their games more closely, or setting up a private game with people you know instead.

4. There are maps that you can study to help strategise one’s gameplay

In Among Us, players can choose to spawn in one of three maps – The Skeld, Mira HQ and Polus. One strategy that players can do is to study the layout of the map. This is especially useful when defending yourself during the discussions as being able to give the exact location as well as the specific tasks that you were doing creates a much stronger alibi for yourself.

Imposters will also greatly benefit from knowing the maps as they can “vent” (teleport) from one end of the room to another and knowing how to escape quick will give them a bigger advantage.

5. It’s a fun game that all can enjoy

With the rise of Among Us, there was initially plans to release Among Us 2, but that has soon been put on hold and the developers have decided that they will channel resources to improving the current version.
