From 3 May to 31 July 2024, the Antoine de Saint Exupéry: When a Prince takes Flight exhibition at Alliance Française de Singapour pays tribute to Antoine de Saint Exupéry, best known as the author of The Little Prince, on the 80th anniversary of his disappearance.
Even though it is a small exhibition, Antoine de Saint Exupéry: When a Prince takes Flight is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore his legacy through a rare collection of exclusive artefacts, including first drafts of manuscripts, handwritten letters, original drawings and personal belongings. These precious items are on loan from the Saint Exupéry Foundation.

The exhibition charts out the captivating journey of the late Antoine de Saint Exupéry who lived a multifaceted life of the late Saint Exupéry.
Explore his roles as a writer, adventurer, and pilot. The different facets of his life are presented through the enchanting narrative of The Little Prince and offers an immersive exploration of Saint Exupéry’s extraordinary life and legacy.
Adventurer, Writer and WWII Hero
The Antoine de Saint Exupéry: When a Prince takes Flight exhibition is divided into three thematic sections – Adventurer, Writer and WWII Hero.
The first room has the ambiance of a private mansion. The walls are framed with Saint Exupéry’s family portraits and a timeline provides an overview of Saint Exupéry’s familial history and early influences.
The second room dives deeper into Saint Exupéry’s dual identities as a writer and adventurer.
There are handwritten letters and original manuscripts, on loan from the Saint Exupéry Foundation.
In this section, you can get a sense of Saint Exupéry’s literary prowess and his passion for storytelling.
Central to this mesmerising display is a sculpture of paper planes, symbolising the delicate balance between Saint Exupéry’s adventurous spirit and his profound literary contributions.
The last section pays homage to Saint Exupéry’s heroic endeavours as a WWII Hero and pilot. It highlights his pivotal role during World War II and his military legacy which ended when he disappeared while piloting a plane on his last mission from Corsica.
You can also try out virtual reality (VR) headset that simulates the experience of flying a plane.
This highlight of this section is Saint Exupéry’s engraved name bracelet. This artefact was discovered at sea in 1998 at the site of his tragic plane crash.
This remarkable artefact was discovered on 7 September 1998 by fisherman Jean-Claude Bianco off the creeks of Marseille. The chain bracelet was given to Antoine de Saint Exupéry by Consuelo, his wife in 1942 when they were in New York
A Journey of Discovery & Family-Friendly Activities
The small exhibition offers a captivating journey into the life of the author of The Little Prince.
Complementing the exhibition, there will be programmes such as screenings, ranging from the documentary “Invisible Essence: The Little Prince” – a compilation of Saint Exupéry’s most inspiring moments – to “The Little Prince”, a delightful movie introducing children to the extraordinary world of The Little Prince.
In addition, there will be six workshops offering creative pursuits such as drawing and painting workshops for children and wooden plane building with Just Fly It, fostering creativity in both adults and children alike.
Comedian Hossan Leong will also be captivating audiences with his storytelling of characters from Antoine de Saint Exupéry’s “The Little Prince” and there will be guided tours for families too.
