Doctors from Singapore’s largest paediatric specialist hospital, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital have released a new series of illustrated books – The Baby Bear Paediatric Care Series – that makes use of engaging storytelling to shed light on common childhood conditions in Singapore.


The Baby Bear Paediatric Care Series: Educating Young Children About Common Childhood Conditions

The Baby Bear Paediatric Care Series is a 12-book collection that has been penned by medical experts and combines practical medical advice with charming storylines. 

Written for children between the ages of 3 and 8, the books feature animal protagonists who have to deal with common childhood conditions. The books contain simple, age-appropriate explanations of what can otherwise be complex medical conditions. 

It also includes practical tips on how family and friends can help, promoting greater compassion and empathy amongst the readers.

The books in the The Baby Bear Paediatric Care Series aim to educate, debunk myths and destigmatise these common childhood conditions.   

Each book has been colourfully illustrated by Uma Bhojraj and features cute animal characters, making them accessible to young children.

At the moment, four of the 12 books in The Baby Bear Paediatric Care Series have been released. These tackle the childhood conditions of food allergies, asthma, obesity and leukaemia.

The four books are:

  • Milly and the Milk Disaster – story about a little monkey with a food allergy;
  • Wallace’s Song – a story about a whale with asthma;
  • Maxine’s Big Worry – a story about a meerkat with a weight problem; and
  • Leroy Roars Again – tale about a little lion with leukaemia.

The other eight books in the series will be published over the coming year. They will cover topics such as:

  • Eczema
  • Epilepsy
  • Prematurity
  • Sensory processing
  • Psychosomatism
  • Diabetes in children
  • Children with disabilities
  • Children who look different (dysmorphism)

These books are ideal for parents and educators to read together with their children and can help to build empathy, especially if their child knows others who have one of these conditions.
