Clayful Art Café: Pottery Painting

Clayful Art Café: Pottery Painting

Clayful Art Café is located on the third floor of Orchard Central. When we were locating the café, the open concept and green potted plants used as space dividers were very inviting.

It was as if we were in a garden with the luxury of sitting al fresco, like we would in a temperate climate.

Pick Your Glass or Pottery to Paint

Pick Your Glass or Pottery to Paint

The first step is to pick the glass or pottery to paint on. We had the options of wine glasses, ceramic mugs, bowls, coin banks, animal shaped pottery or even trees.

If you choose to paint on the glassware or coin banks, you can take home the pieces on the very same day. For other pottery, they will need to be fired before they are ready for collection about 7 days.

For more inspiration, take a stroll around the café to see complete pieces displayed. I saw “polkaros-inspired” vases, a wine glass with a blue whale and other lovely pieces.

Unfortunately, when we visited Clayful Art Café, they had run out of glass mugs! The kids were eye-ing those initially and had to change their plans.

My 10 year old settled on a mug, while I painted a bowl.

There are glass pieces, clay cups as well as ceramic plates in different shapes and sizes, all ranging in price from $8 to $18.

Sketch, then Start Painting

Sketch Then Start Painting

We used pencils to sketch what we were going to paint. This was essential especially to amateur artists like ourselves. The pencil marks will eventually be removed before firing.

Then we could apply a few coats of paint – ensuring that each coat is dry before more paint is applied. Do note that there are limited options of colours, it is helpful to plan the drawings after looking at the colour selection.

I was intending to paint snowcapped mountains but realised there was no white paint for the pottery. So I made do with the lightest colours possible.

Painting together

After about an hour of painting, both the adults and children were done!

Painting together while chatting is a wonderful way of bonding, honing our creativity and a way of slowing down in the busyness of life.

A Meal in an Indoor Garden

A Meal in an Indoor Garden

You might think Clayful Art Café’s focus is on pottery painting. We were surprised and delighted that the meals are sumptuous and worth a shoutout!

We ordered mains (from $22) to share and loved the Korean flavours done in a Western twist. The Bulgogi Steak Flank Pizza was a delight especially for the kids with the melted cheese paired with the perfectly seasoned beef.

Korean seafood pancake

The Korean seafood pancake was also a crowd-pleaser and perfect for sharing. Dip it into the Gochujang Mayonnaise sauce for a teeny kick of spice.

Apart from pizza, there are pasta dishes and also mains like Fish & Chips and Steak. We found the portions to be really generous!

Drinks

Drinks-wise, we had a Mango shake, a Blue-pea Lemon tea and a Ginger Lemon tea. All of which quenched our thirst and paired with the dishes beautifully.

There was also a Ginseng series of drinks that piqued our curiosity.

If you love wine, this offer might entice you. Adults are entitled to free-flow prosecco at $38 or free-flow beer at $20 from 12pm daily!

Cheesecakes

Desserts wise, you can choose fluffy souffle pancakes, Burnt Cheesecakes and more. Families will be pleased at the variety of dishes at Clayful Art Café. This also ends the whole pottery painting experience on a high.

Fees & Costs at Clayful Art Cafe

For students, the cover fee to paint at Clayful Art Café is just $20, for 2 hours at the café. For others, the cover fee is at $30.

Additional fees apply for the glassware and ceramic ware ranging from $8 to $18. Firing cost is included!

How about painting a mug or a bowl as a Christmas gift? The effort put into personalising the items would make it a memorable and one-of-a-kind present.

Whether it’s painting an image of a cherished family memory or illustrating each other’s portraits, this collaborative experience fosters connection and results in a lasting masterpiece that will be cherished for years to come.
