Flipside 2019 returns to Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay from 24 May to 2 June with a host of laugh-out-loud, imaginative, and unexpected performances and encounters for young and old to dive right into.
Indulge your inner child and celebrate creativity through different art forms, including physical theatre, puppetry, comedy, music, and visual art and design.
Flipside invites you to open up your mind and be free of rules as you experience the surprising ways life and the arts intersect. Some free and others ticketed, here are some of our top picks for Flipside 2019.
The Artist (Finland)
Combining hilarious clowning and physical theatre, The Artist – created by Circo Aereo, a contemporary circus group from Finland, and Thomas Monckton, an internationally-acclaimed New Zealand-born circus artist – is about an artist whose focus begins to stray as he waits for inspiration.

As his blank canvas taunts him, every task he attempts is filled with challenges, until chaos is unavoidable.
Since its premiere in 2017, this hour-long production has garnered praise at festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018 and the London International Mime Festival 2019.
Recommended for ages 6 and above, tickets at $35 per person. Limited concessions available at $28.

Giant’s Table (Korea)
First, a small, ordinary table transforms into an extraordinary giant’s table. Then, objects and drawings start coming to life, and nothing is what it seems.
Giant’s Table – created by CCOTBBAT, a visual theatre company that integrates fine arts and theatre for children and adults – combines live animation and physical theatre, with the audience right at the heart of the action.
Without giving too much away, audience participation will include jumping onto the Giant’s Table and interacting with live drawings on projection. This will be one stage production you can really let loose!
Suitable for ages 4 and above, Giant’s Table will be a truly whimsical experience from start to finish. Tickets are priced at $25 per person. PIP Club savings available.

When: Friday 31 May to Sunday 2 June 2019
The Pigeoning (US)
Frank, who is obsessed with cleanliness and order, is convinced that pigeons are plotting against him.
The Pigeoning – recommended for ages 8 and above – is a darkly comedic, yet heartfelt story, that brings together Bunraku-style puppetry and lo-fi special effects, and tells an epic tale about the illusion of safety and control in the context of the end of the world.
A funny, dialogue-less performance, The Pigeoning will captivate school-age children and speak to the adults, seasoned theatre-goers and noobs alike.
Each performance is followed by a post-show dialogue with the artist where the audience will get to see the set and puppets up close.
Tickets start at $35 per person. Limited concessions available at $28.

Endless Entertainment
Among the non-ticketed acts set to entertain the crowds include Fluid Sounds: A Musical Parade, an exploration in sound and motion, and an interactive Brazilian body percussion performance by Bloco Singapura.
Local circus arts community Bornfire Circus will be presenting a new act, Ubox 2, while Trashpeze will be combining humour and aerial prowess in a performance about three characters who find themselves stranded in the land of trash.
Festival-goers can expect plenty of other whacky and unusual performances that will keep the entertainment flowing at Flipside 2019.
