Here’s a simple recipe for making a yummy hot spiced chocolate drink! The drink is sweet and not at all spicy. It is called Hot Spiced Chocolate as it is piping hot and spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg.
The Cinnamon tree is an evergreen plant that grows up to 15 metres in height. It is from the inner bark of the tree that we get our cinnamon sticks. Cinnamon possesses anti-viral properties and is also used in Chinese and Indian cooking, making dishes more flavourful.
Another spice in the Hot Spiced Chocolate recipe is the nutmeg. The Nutmeg tree can grow up to 10 metres tall. It has small flowers with a faint fragrance. From the large, oval fruits, we obtain two distinct spices – nutmeg and mace.
The nutmeg spice is from the hard, brown-black seed and mace is from the fruit’s red lacy seed covering. Nutmeg is used for both sweet and savoury dishes in Asian cooking and it is also used in the perfume industry. If you have wind in your bowels or if you suffer from motion sickness, you can take some nutmeg to relieve yourself.

Cacao, from the Theobroma cacao tree, is also a spice. The tree has both flavouring and medicinal properties. Cacao powder is made from fermented beans that have not been roasted. We see cocoa powder more often in supermarkets. Both cocoa powder and cacao powder are similar, except that cocoa is made at a much higher temperature and is typically packaged with sugar and dairy.
