Throwing a party on National Day can be a time to celebrate the nation’s birthday plus watch the parade together with friends and family. It is a wonderful time of getting together and encouraging the younger generation’s patriotism. Since watching the National Day parade as a family is often an annual tradition, how about doing even more to make it a memorable event?
How to Throw a National Day Themed Party
Red & White Décor
First, get the home decked in red and white. Decorations are aplenty at your nearest supermarkets, petrol kiosks and online stores. However, if you would like to print your own buntings, here are some templates you can use for free!
Up the ante with Singapore-themed décor such as local landmarks, iconic symbols, nostalgic elements such as the SuperTrees made with broccoli or even CDs.

Since it is National Day, there must be local delicacies served! Food is also a big part of our culture, so serve up Singaporean classics! From traditional childhood snacks like gem biscuits, kachang puteh to well-loved dishes like Satay and Chicken rice, the National Day party feast pays tribute to our Singapore flavours too.
Some additional steps to take include embellishing the food with red and white flags, or red and white jelly as desserts.
Kopi-C Kosong or Teh Limau? Drinks for the Party
Quench everyone’s thirst with the classic drinks you can find at the coffee shop. For a consistent colour theme, try making a jug of bandung! Other drink flavours you can serve include barley, chrysanthemum, ice lemon tea. Or you can even setup a pretend coffee shop with a drinks uncle or aunty in charge to take orders. Complete with yelling out the customer’s orders of course.
Dress Up
What’s the fun in a party if there isn’t any dressing up! The usual dress code would be red and white. Spice it up with classic Singaporean dressing! Whether it’s the usual Uniqlo uniform, or the Army green t-shirt, slippers, dress up as a Singaporean character! The person in charge of drinks can wear the classic white singlet with a good morning towel around the neck, while the head of the household can dress up as a politician ready to welcome everyone into the home.
Fun and Games
Plan some fun activities for the guests! Here are some suggested games.
Singapore Trivia
How about testing everyone’s knowledge on Singapore with a quiz? Even the children can participate in this kid-friendly quiz on Singapore. The questions on Singapore’s history, culture, landmarks might even stump some adults.
Singapore Food Preparation Contest
How about a food challenge? This settles the food line up with everyone participating in the cookout or a dessert preparation challenge. Then it’s the tastebuds doing the judging!
Singlish Charades
Think you know your Singlish? Perhaps put it to the test with a game of charades! Act out the phrases and make the participants guess the words. This is guaranteed to make everyone laugh.
Singapore-themed Card Games and Board Games
Everyone loves a good card game or board game. Purchase them for the party and they get plenty of mileage during gatherings. Kopi King is a fun one that gets everyone learning the ingredients of coffee shop drinks. This is a chaotic game that can get pretty competitive. One other card game for more yelling and screaming is Chope. Easy to play, you simply have to learn to chope the table and “siam” the mynahs at the hawker centre.
Another game to include is the Let’s Go Singapore board game. This game is like simplified version of Ticket to Ride – Singapore style. The objective is simple – get eight points by connecting various destinations!
Watching the Parade
The highlight of the party is definitely the parade. Set up a viewing area with comfortable seating. You can even project the parade onto the wall or large screen for optimal viewing. Distribute the Singapore flags and start the Kallang wave!
