For a dose of old school, duck into Sin Heng Claypot Bak Koot Teh. With food menus on the wall, it is almost as if time has reversed backwards by several decades. Just off Joo Chiat Road, along Koon Seng Road, is Dunman Food Centre. The two-storey food centre offers honest hawker fare. Amongst the stores that are worth trying are the popiah, kway chap and wonton noodles. Our go-to here is the tau kwa pau or stuffed beancurd. Head to the lower level where you can order this delicious snack to go or to eat there.

Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah
One of our childhood memories was heading to Joo Chiat to buy freshly made popiah skin. You can still purchase these handmade popiah skins at Kway Guan Huat Joo Chiat Popiah, a shop that has been around since 1938. Visit in the mornings on weekends to watch the popiah skin makers in action.

Joo Chiat Road is fun to explore because you discover swanky and hip new places next door to old businesses that have been around for generations. That in itself is one of the charms of Joo Chiat. But there is more to keep a look out for as you walk down Joo Chiat.
Joo Chiat Murals
There are several murals adorning the buildings along Joo Chiat Road. These Joo Chiat murals are painted on the buildings on both sides of the road. These include buildings such as the Joo Chiat Community Club.
Two of our favourite Joo Chiat Murals can be found facing each other at the J0017 Joo Chiat Road Car Park.
A History of Healing by Tell Your Children is a tribute to the building’s past when it was the Joo Chiat Maternal and Child Health Clinic, and also reflects on the themes of life and healing.
Opposite from it is a mural featuring cats called Jalan Jalan by Didier Jaba Mathieu.
Koon Seng Road Colourful Houses
Another spot that draws visitors is the colourful houses along Koon Seng Road, just off Joo Chiat. It is a popular photo spot.
We also enjoy admiring the Peranakan tiles found on the houses opposite the Koon Seng Road Colourful Houses.
Koon Seng Park
If you need to take a break from all the shophouses along Joo Chiat Road, there is Koon Seng Park, a little green space with a small playground that is just a stone’s throw away from the Koon Seng Colourful Houses. The Intan
Off Joo Chiat Road and along Joo Chiat Terrace, you will find The Intan. This is a home museum where you can be introduced to Peranakan culture. Find out more about The Intan.
