When you think of Kallang, what comes to mind? The National Stadium? Or, if you are slightly older, the Kallang Roar at the National Stadium back in the day? There is plenty to do in the Kallang area, especially for those who are the sporty sort.

Kallang gets its name from the Kallang River. Singapore’s longest river, the Kallang River begins all the way at Lower Peirce Reservoir, running through Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park before making its way south and emptying into the Kallang Basin.

Let’s take a dive into things to do around the Kallang district of Singapore.

With the Kallang Basin at its threshold, it is no wonder that the Kallang is a great place to take to the water. You can head over to the Water Sports Centre at Singapore Sports Hub to rent a kayak or a canoe and take to the water. Occasionally, there are even programmes where you can rent a kayak for free by helping to clean up the river too! Do take note that kids will need to be at least 7 years old.

Splash-N-Surf & Stingray

Water Playgrounds in Singapore

Want to enjoy water play without having to launch out into the Kallang Basin? Kallang Wave Mall’s Splash-N-Surf water playground is a great spot for kids to have some fun. As a bonus, you can get a great view of the city skyline while they splash about. Another water-based facility nearby is the Stingray, a 12-metre-long surfing simulator, great for older kids and adults.

Rock Climbing

Rock Climbing

Another fun challenge that you can do in Kallang is to go rock climbing. One spot is located within Kallang Wave Mall. At Climb Central, you can climb in air-conditioned comfort. Alternatively, another place in Kallang where you can go rock climbing is at Aperia Mall’s boulder+ where there is an arch centrepiece and 60-degree spray wall.  Put on your Spider-man game face and scale a wall!

100PLUS Promenade

100PLUS Promenade

For those who wish to get out and move – rain or shine – the 100PLUS Promenade is a great sheltered spot to go for a walk, jog or even inline skate. You don’t need to reschedule your activities just because of inclement weather anymore. Of course, there are plenty of other facilities at Singapore Sports Hub, such as beach volleyball courts, bowls and giant chess, so you can check them out too.

Kallang Riverside Park

Kallang Riverside Park

If you do want to get outdoors and enjoy a bit of nature, why not pay a visit to Kallang Riverside Park. Located on both sides of the Kallang River, you can take a walk along the park where there are also historical markers that provide more details about the Kallang area’s past.

Singapore Sports Museum and Shimano Cycling World

Shimano Cycling World

Looking for something indoor to do at Kallang. Pay a visit to the Singapore Sports Museum and Shimano Cycling World. There, you can take a look at Singapore’s sporting heritage and also learn about bicycles through the ages with displays that include a penny-farthing bike.

Ice Skating

Kallang Ice World, located within Leisure Park Kallang, is Singapore’s oldest ice skating rink and the only one remaining one since the closure of The Rink @ JCube. So, if you are itching to glide on ice, you can skate over to Kallang Ice World for a icy adventure. Just be aware that there are quite a number of mixed reviews online about the quality of the ice. And as always with ice skating, be careful when skating.

Kallang Playgrounds

Kallang Breeze Playground: Climb Up To A Treehouse

Want to check out a playground in the Kallang area? We personally find that the Singapore Sports Hub playground is quite small. As an alternative, check out the Kallang Breeze playground, where kids can climb up a treehouse-themed play tower. You may also be interested in reading about the children’s playground at Aperia Mall

Kallang Food

When it comes to Kallang food places, you can find many different types of restaurants and food spots to suit different wallets and palates. If you are looking for food in shopping malls, the two big malls in the Kallang area with a variety of restaurants and eateries are Kallang Wave Mall and Aperia Mall.

It has a charming garden atmosphere with selection of food and is also pet-friendly. Another Kallang food spot is G7 Live Seafood & G7 Frog Porridge which is known for its frog dishes. Plus, you can get seafood dishes too.

Jalan Benaan Kapal Food Centre

Lastly, if you wish to go old school and imagine that you have gone back in time, pay a visit to Jalan Benaan Kapal Food Centre. This hawker centre is known for its Malay food and retains its character from decades ago.
