Aspiring astronauts and space fanatics will be psyched to know that 2024 has been a year of space for LEGO, with multiple space-themed sets released across LEGO’s popular product lines, all bearing LEGO’s new “Space” branding.
Review of LEGO City Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life 60431
LEGO City Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life 60431 immediately captured the heart and imagination of my 5 year old space-lover. “I’m going to drive this rover when I go to Mars next time!”
The set features an impressive-looking space rover all set to explore the rugged terrain of an alien planet, as well as a rock formation inhabited by 2 alien life forms. 2 minifigures are included as well – based on their details, the blue one appears to be the pilot/driver while the green one seems to be a scientist, armed with a camera to capture photographic data and accompanied by a mini video recorder rover.

When not in use, the camera can even be stowed on the astronaut’s backpack!
While the recommended age is listed as 6+, slightly younger children would be able to complete the build with some adult guidance.
Build Experience of LEGO City Space Explore Rover and Alien Life
LEGO City Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life 60431 consists of 4 bags of LEGO pieces. Bag 1 consists of the pieces to build the alien terrain and mini rover, while the pieces for the rover itself are found in Bags 2-4. The instructions are clear and easy to follow, and a digital copy can also be found by scanning a QR code on the bag. While we completed the build over a few days, it would probably be possible to complete it in 3-4 hours as well.
A remarkable feature of the rover is its suspension mechanism (featuring elements from LEGO Technic). The use of springs attached to the front wheels as well as a tilting suspension at the rear allow the rover to traverse rocky terrain (including the alien rock formation) and clamber over obstacles.
The assembly of the wheels was probably the trickiest bit of the whole build, but was also great for training little hands in both dexterity and patience!
Another cool element is the storage space in the rear of the rover, which is roomy enough to accommodate the mini rover. A pull-down ramp completes the play experience, where the rover can be deployed smoothly.
The windscreen of the rover can be easily removed, granting access to the spacious interior of the rover which accommodates 2 minifigures. We enjoyed admiring the details such as a printed console in the driver’s seat and a space logo on the roof of the rover.
Venturing into Outer Space While on Earth
LEGO City Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life 60431 is sure to be enjoyed by all who like imagining life in space, dream of going to space, or simply love all things space. The sleek design of the rover gives it great “zoomability”, while the inclusion of 2 minifigures as well as 2 alien figures allows for hours of imaginative play.
My 5 year old especially enjoyed maneuvering the rover over the rocky alien terrain, thanks in no small part to the excellent design of the suspension mechanism.
What surprises await the astronauts in this alien environment? Will the aliens be friendly or hostile? What views will the astronaut be able to capture on his camera? Embark on a new adventure every day with Lego City Space Explorer Rover and Alien Life 60431!
