Over the past 6 years, LEGO has released exciting and whimsical Chinese New Year sets and we have been looking forward to these new sets for the year 2025. This first set that we got our hands on is the LEGO Lucky Cat 40813 which is LEGO’s second take on the Maneki-neko Japanese cat figurine believed to bring good luck to the owner.
LEGO Lucky Cat – Bringing Owners Good Luck
Given its popularity amongst the Chinese as “招财猫” and especially beloved by owners of Chinese shops and restaurants, it is bound to be a popular LEGO set. At 280 pieces and recommended for ages 9 and up, it is an easy build and can be quickly completed to put on display pronto!
Our Experience building LEGO Lucky Cat
Overall, it was a great set that we enjoyed building, and the result speaks for itself. So adorable and with an arm that swings! Science and logic dictates that no any other version of the cat will be able to draw more business than this cute and lovely LEGO specimen.
The set came in 5 bags, with just 3 stickers and 1 building manual.
In this first bag, we build the base of the cat with a pendulum wheel and tyre swing set-up inside that will facilitate the swinging movements of the cat’s arm. Simple yet effective.
Completing bag 2 results in a nice closure of the base with pieces facilitating the addition of the limbs and head of the cat.
Bag 3 is where you find the arm that will be connected to the internal tyre swing. Here is where one of the 3 stickers go, and it is undeniably cute! The simple spherical piece representing the bell could probably be nicer if it had a bell design printed on but that’s just a minor niggle.
Bag 4 gives us the internal structure of the cat’s head for the attachment of the larger pieces completing the face, ears and muzzle area of the cat which came in bag 5.
We have a LEGO Lucky Cat!
So here we have LEGO Lucky Cat 40813 in its completed glory! It has interchangeable pieces for the panel at its tummy which are a gold coin and a piece with “千万両” (10 million Ryō, a gold currency unit used in pre-Meiji Japan). Don’t miss the little white banana piece for its tail!
LEGO Lucky Cat 40813 is a must have for homes and businesses as a part of the CNY decorations this year! Everyone walking by will surely stop and wiggle its little cute paw! The resident dog (Alfie) looked at the cat in contempt and offered his paw but sorry Alfie, I think you lose this round.
