Marky Polo continues his adventures around the world in Singapore in Emily Lim-Leh’s latest addition to the Marky Polo Travel series, Marky Polo in Singapore. In this book, he hosts his fun-loving cousin in Singapore where they get to hang out with his “wild” friends in some fun places around the island.
Marky Polo in Singapore is a delightful read that will get children between the ages of 3 to 8 all excited about their favourite attractions in Singapore and have them learning about the wildlife in our city at the same time! The Augmented Reality function adds on another level of fun and interactivity.

Marky Polo is a pangolin. Did you know that pangolins are native to Singapore? Marky’s family is made up of seasoned travellers. His great-grandfather Macho Polo is the first and only pangolin to have scaled Mount Everest while great-grandmother Muay Thai Polo is a top martial arts fighter from Thailand.
There are also Marky’s grandparents – Matcha and Miso Polo who love Japan. His parents, Masala and Mala Polo, love spices as you can tell.
Last but not least, Merry Polo is the most fun-loving of all. However, her thoughtlessness may occasionally cause some trouble.
Marky Polo in Singapore: Marky and His Friends – Merli, Merry and More Wildlife
Marky’s friends join in on the Singapore adventures. They include Jewel, an Oriental Pied Hornbill, Marina the otter and even an Unidentified Flying Durian called D65. Together, they make sure that Merry has an exciting time in Singapore.
Singapore’s Merlion mascot Merli also makes his picture book debut in Marky Polo in Singapore! The book was launched to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Merlion statue’s installation and Merli is the perfect ambassador for Singapore.
Marky Polo in Singapore Book Review: Fun Exploring Singapore on the Page
Children will be taken on a wonderful adventure with Marky, Merli, Merry and the others to familiar local attractions such as Jewel, Gardens by the Bay, Sentosa, Arab Street and Chinatown!
It was refreshing to see the various local locations featured in a children’s picture book. They were instantly recognisable and each destination was peppered with fun and interesting facts.
The book also features our local hawker fare, diverse wildlife and even Yip Yew Chong’s murals. It is a cultural feast with the sumptuous dishes from various ethnic groups being introduced. I loved how Merry got a taste of the classic Singapore dishes!
The book also features popular playspots such as Nestopia, MegaZip and HydroDash – bound to be huge reasons for a visit to Sentosa.
Accompanying the easy-to-read text are captivating visuals by Nicholas Liem. Complementing the hilarious dialogue, these visuals make the animal characters come to life, capturing their personalities, expressions and gestures.
Bonus: Augmented Reality Experience
It was super fun scanning certain pages of the book as there was additional information to learn from videos, websites on the attractions and faces on animals. The pages literally come to life using an Augmented Reality (AR) function!
Children who love learning more about the various places of interest will appreciate the AR tool. It enriches the reading experience for children by engaging them with visuals, sounds and interactive 3D elements.
Young readers can use the AR feature to have a closer look at various attractions and even examine virtual 3D models of heritage shophouses and Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve.
