Getting a device for your child may be a tough decision – on one hand it is much more convenient to communicate with them with they are not home, on the other they could get unsupervised access and come across inappropriate content. Hence, myFirstFone’s Smartwatch Phone may provide a good solution – communicating with your child and knowing his or her whereabout without access to social media or games.
Overview of myFirst Fone R1 Smartwatch Phone
Essentially a watch and phone combined, myFirst Fone R1 is a wearable phone that allows one to call, chat, play music, take pictures and be tracked via GPS. The great thing about myfirst Fone R1 is the lack of the full functionality of a mobile device with social media and games, while ensuring parents and caregivers are aware of their child’s whereabouts.
Apart from a clock, it has a phone function for calls and chats, music player, camera, clock, GPS tracker and fitness tracker. It also enables Geo-Fencing and parents can preset safety zones using the app.

You can also preset class modes to prevent the child from using the phone during lessons. This would help to minimise distractions as the phone cannot be used during a specific time.
To communicate with the child, one can either send a text message using the myFirst fone app or call directly.
Parent Review of myFirst Fone R1 Smartwatch Phone
As a parent, I thought this was a nifty invention that has the best of both worlds in terms of security and convenience. Without the distractions and potential temptations of a mobile phone, myFirst Fone was helpful in facilitating communications between parent and child.
For the few times my child used the Smartwatch phone, he could easily contact me and send me messages and pictures. While it became incessant nuisance calling, I was glad that it stopped them from asking me for more devices since the main purpose of one was to call a parent.
Apart from communication, I could check on their location and set boundaries as well as alerts if they stepped out of certain areas. This would minimise the anxiety if my child wandered off.
One helpful function was also the removal detection. I get an alert whenever the watch is removed. This may be a cause of concern if the child is out of home or school. It can also be helpful if the watch was not worn when required.
Another useful function was the pedometer, monitoring distance, total steps and calories burnt. Such health-related records provide information especially when the child is running or cycling in the neighbourhood.
I appreciated the alerts letting me know whenever battery is low so it can be charged. Perhaps one area of improvement is the battery life of the watch. It requires charging every few days.
Hybrid Smartwatch Phone – Packs a Punch for Parent & Child
If you see the need to be in touch with your child who may need to travel to and fro school or enrichment classes independently, this could be a functional device to use. Since it has no apps and Social Media, I feel more assured that the device would be safe for a child’s use.
