Craving Japanese Western food? The Royal Host restaurant may just have what you need to satisfy your craving. The restaurant, which is from Japan, serves up dishes like hamburg steak, omu rice and Japanese pasta.
Royal Host: Japanese Western Restaurant in Singapore
Royal Host opened in Singapore in 2024 but its history goes back much further. It has its origins in Fukuoka, Japan back in 1951 and now has more than 200 locations across Japan. In Singapore, Royal Host has two locations, one at Jewel Changi Airport and the other at Takashimaya.
We recently paid the Royal Host restaurant at Jewel Changi Airport a visit for lunch.
Decor and Service
We were warmly welcomed when we were arrived at the Royal Host at Jewel Changi Airport. It almost felt like we were back in Japan and experiencing Japanese hospitality.
The decor within Royal Host feels classy with wood panelling and warm lighting.
We were handed the menu to browse through. Ordering is done by scanning the QR code at the table. Everything looked really appetising and we were hard pressed to decide on what to order.
Food at Royal Host
Eventually, we had to narrow it down and placed our orders.
The first dish that arrived at the table was our order of onion gratin soup ($7.80). This was served in a bowl that came with a cover to keep the soup inside nice and warm.
Inside was a rich consomme soup with an enticing slice of baguette melted Gruyere cheese on top. It is a signature dish at Royal Host and we could appreciate why as we enjoyed it.
Apparently, even Marilyn Monroe was enchanted by Royal Host’s onion gratin soup.
Hamburg Steak
Another signature at Royal Host is the hamburg steak. While you can choose the signature 240g ROYAL Hamburg Steak, we opted for the smaller 190g weekday set Demi Glace Hamburg instead.
We enjoyed the rich flavour of the beef patty and this paired perfectly with the demi glace sauce. While demi glace sauces can sometimes be too sweet, we found ourselves enjoying the flavour of the sauce at Royal Host.
Omu Rice
A classic Japanese Western dish is omu rice. Royal Host’s version is made with ketchup fried rice and snuggled over with creamy scrambled eggs. It is then completed with demi glace sauce. The plain version of the ROYAL Omurice is $21.80 but we opted to have the version topped off with Japanese mushrooms ($26.80).
If you don’t fancy demi glace sauce, Royal Host in Singapore has omurice with white cream sauce and Hiroshima oyster on top ($28.80). Or you can try a special Japanese x Singapore fusion version with Singapore chilli sauce and snow crab on top ($30.80).
We were happy to stick with the demi glace version of the omurice and it did not disappoint.
Japanese Pasta
Japanese pasta just hits different. At Royal Host, the options for pasta include Seafood & Mentaiko Sauce ($29.40) and Japanese Style with YUZU flavour ($26.40).
However, we had to get the Salmon & Ikura Tomato Cream Sauce ($30.80). This is prepared with salmon fillet, black tiger prawns, tomato cream and topped off with salmon roe.
Overall Thoughts about Royal Host Restaurant
If you are missing Japan or just want to enjoy some delicious Japanese Western food, Royal Host is a good restaurant to visit. The prices felt on the high side but it also feel like you are paying for a nicer experience and food. We must also say that the service was excellent when we visited and the overall experience was great.
