Artist Yip Yew Chong’s murals typically have elements that allow viewers to pose beside them. He has now taken it to the next level with A Stroll in the Painting, a roving installation that takes inspiration from artist Cheong Soo Pieng’s works.
Take A Stroll in the Painting with Yip Yew Chong
Yip Yew Chong is well known for his heritage murals in neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Tiong Bahru and Kampong Glam. This time around, he is exhibiting his work in a series of installations at shopping malls around Singapore.
For A Stroll in the Painting, Yip was inspired by the artworks of Cheong Soo Pieng, one of the most influential Singapore artists of his generation, and in particular, Cheong’s Drying Salted Fish.

Cheong’s Drying Salted Fish, painted in 1978, is a work that illustrates how fish was commonly preserved in Southeast Asia from the 1940s to the 1960s. Back then, it was not unusual to see salted fish drying out in the sun.
Reinterpreting Cheong Soo Pieng’s Drying Salted Fish
Cheong’s work has led Yip to create scenes of Southeast Asia.
Take a picture with villagers selling their wares in a market or children happily playing congkak.
Some of the installation pieces also have cut outs so that you can peer out for a photo.
And, of course, you can definitely find a cat or two.
There is also a cut out that depicts Yip at work, about to start painting on a blank canvas.
Art Activities
You can use your imagination to create your own stories and take part in art activities at A Stroll in the Painting.
Once you have finished colouring your own fish art work, hang it out to “dry” just like the people in the past did.
The installation is suitable for audiences of all ages and designed to be wheelchair accessible.
