Kids excitedly gather around a colourful installation at the Entrance Pavilion, at Jurong Lake Gardens’ North Car Park. Taking turns, they go behind a set of black curtains where they become part of The Bird Colouring Social Club.
Part of National Arts Council’s Arts In Your Neighbourhood November 2021, The Bird Colouring Social Club takes its cue from the days when the community would gather to hear songbirds sing. Birds in cages would be hoisted up for their admirers to listen to their lilting melodies.
Nowadays, there are fewer such spots in Singapore but kids can imagine what it was like while putting their own imagination to good use at The Bird Colouring Social Club.

As the name suggests, kids can pick up a colouring sheet and get to work adding bursts of colour to personalise their own bird.
The birds on the colouring sheets include a selection of Singapore’s garden and urban birds.
Once the colouring sheet has been completed, it can then be scanned.
Digital Aviary
Then, that’s where the magic takes place. Kids can enter into the curtained-off area which is a digital aviary. They can try to spot their creation as it takes flight.
The Bird Colouring Social Club has been created by Kronoscapes for Arts In Your Neighbourhood November 2021. Kronoscapes is a multidisciplinary art collection that was founded in May 2020 by artists John Ng, Sandy Yeo and Lee Sze-Chin.
In addition to Jurong Lake Gardens, the installation can also be found at Marine Terrace and will be making its way to Braddell Heights Community Hub. For more details, refer to this story here.
