We recently paid a visit to The Dim Sum Place at The Centrepoint on Orchard Road to sample the dim sum that they had available.
We settled down at the cheery outlet at The Centrepoint. The restaurant is located at the basement level and faces out towards Orchard Road. Its location make it easy to find.
We like the brightly lit interior of The Dim Sum Place at The Centrepoint and looked forward to the food. The restaurant’s mascot is also so cute and gave us a happy feeling!
Ordering the dim sum and dishes at The Dim Sum Place is a simple matter of scanning the QR code at the table, scrolling through the online menu and placing the order for the dishes we wanted.
Before long, the dim sum started to arrive at our table.
Trying out the Classic Dim Sum Dishes
We had placed an order for the classics. This meant steamed items like siew mai, har gow and chee cheong fun or rice rolls, along with chicken char siew bao.
We were pleasantly surprised to find the the har gow or Crystal Shrimp Dumpling ($6.90) was on the larger side. The shrimp inside was nice and plump with a satisfying bite.
In another basket came the Steamed Chicken Siew Mai with Shrimp ($6.90). Inside the basket were three pieces. These were also decently good. However, we did reminiscent about the chicken siew mais that we had at another dim sum restaurant recently.
There are several options available for the chee cheong fun or Vermicelli Roll as it is known at Dim Sum Place. The options available include Vermicelli Roll with Sesame (a vegetarian option), Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp and Spring Onion, Vermicelli Roll with Mushroom and Vermicelli Roll with Roasted Chicken Char Siew.
We ordered the Vermicelli Roll with Roasted Chicken Char Siew ($8.90). This came to the table well garnished with spring onions and fried shallots over the top. The roll itself looks rather layered and wrinkled looking, which was unusual to us.
Personally, we found the filling of roasted chicken char siew to be a bit too sweet for our own taste.
What was interesting is that while the Roasted Chicken Char Siew was sweet in the vermicelli roll, we found it be okay within the Chicken Char Siew Bun ($5.90). This assumes that it was the same filling used within both the vermicelli roll and the Chicken Char Siew Bun. Perhaps it was the bun that helped to balance off the taste of the filling.
Fried Dim Sum: Deep Fried Chicken Siew Mai with Shrimp
One interesting dim sum that you can order at Dim Sum Place is the Deep Fried Chicken Siew Mai with Shrimp ($6.90). This is what it says it is – dim sum that has been coated in a light batter and deep fried.
We enjoyed the Deep Fried Chicken Siew Mai with Shrimp. It had a nice crisp as we bit through the batter and inside was the chicken siew mai. This was the first time that we had come across this deep fried dim sum item and it was one of the stand out dishes that we tried at Dim Sum Place.
A signature item at The Dim Sum Place is the X.O Sauce Carrot Cake. We were looking forward to this because we had thoroughly enjoyed a similar style of carrot cake at Dim Sum Haus. Unfortunately, the X.O Sauce Carrot Cake at Dim Sum Place was not what had expected. It was more like a carrot cake omelette. The cubes of carrot cake were added and fried with an egg.
More Dishes at The Dim Sum Place
We had two staple dishes while at The Dim Sum Place.
The first one that we ordered was the Congee with Shredded Chicken ($9.90). This came with a heap of shredded chicken as well as spring onions and fried shallots on top.
The other dish was the Aromatic Garlic Fried Rice with Onsen Egg ($14.90). Those who love garlic will enjoy this and it certainly lived up to its name with the strong aroma of garlic filling the air once it hit the table.
