Barely two months into its opening, Artemis Preskool @ Wisteria Mall has already received various enquiries from parents who have heard about its good services through word of mouth.
“There are parents calling… and the first (thing) they say to me is, ‘I heard good things about your centre,’” Principal Jane Wah shared.
This is a testimony to the quality of care at the preschool, which seeks to make a nurturing impact on children at the infant care, playgroup, nursery, and kindergarten levels.

Jane attributed the good start to the team of dedicated teachers that she works with. Commenting on how fortunate she is to be able to work with colleagues with the same mindset, she said, “They really care for children.”
“As an early childhood educator, passion is very important…. This is a conscience job as parents entrust their children to us. We must deliver and give the best.”
She gave an example of an infant who had just joined the preschool and was taking a while to adapt to the new environment, refusing to take his lunch every day. The team at Artemis Preskool, however, persisted in encouraging the boy to eat.
Their hard work finally paid off when Jane eventually managed to feed him a spoonful of porridge. He liked the taste so much that he finished a full bowl of it!
After warming up to the preschool, the infant started hitting all his developmental milestones quickly. At about 14 months old, he had still been on his fours, but within a month, he started walking and really enjoyed the freedom that it brings.
“We see the change in him (in) less than a month…, which is very fulfilling and my team was like, ‘Wah!’, amazed,” Jane recounted.
Understanding Comes Before Teaching
When it comes to learning, Jane knows how important the preschool’s curriculum is in giving precious little ones a solid educational foundation. But what makes the real difference, to her, is “how we actually care for the child”, “love the child” and “spend time understanding the child’s needs”.
“I always tell my teachers that you need to understand the child first before we can teach the child, because we need to know the likes and dislikes of the child and to know the character of the child before we can actually… impart knowledge,” she elaborated.
Orientation for Parents and Children
Jane makes sure that parents attend an orientation two weeks before their children join Artemis Preskool @ Wisteria Mall. This session allows her and the teachers to find out more about the new students to help them settle in more quickly.
“We try to do continuity caring,” Jane said, which involves customising their approach to try to match what each kid is more familiar with, “to get them to be comfortable with us”.
“Once there’s trust and there’s a bond between the teacher and the child, everything falls (into place) very naturally…. The learning part comes very naturally,” she added.
With the right people and processes in place, it is little wonder that parents are responding positively to the preschool’s childcare service. Sharing her observation, Jane said, “I could see their smiles every day. They are so happy to see their children – happily coming to school and happy going home.”
